Malachite - Stone of Hope

Malachite is a common mineral from the class of carbonates. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system and usually develops massive or grape-like banded aggregates, in rare cases also needle-like prismatic crystals in various shades of green.

People have known about the positive vibrations and energies of gemstones for thousands of years and have used them for their effects. They are used to heal and treat physical and psychological problems, as well as to increase well-being. The energy is transferred in various ways, with direct skin contact being the most common option. Dark green malachite is a very powerful stone that is said to have special powers on its own and in combination with other gemstones. As a stone of hope, it helps to strengthen self-knowledge and build contentment.

Origin and locations of malachite

Malachite is a basic copper carbonate that forms in the oxidation zone when copper ores weather in copper ore deposits. It is therefore a weathering product. The gemstone, which consists of up to 74% copper, forms in a layer of soil close to the earth's surface. Rainwater enriched with oxygen and carbonic acid reaches this layer. The oxygen causes chemical reactions in the metallic ores. This forms chalcopyrite with a fine crystalline coating, malachite. Malachite is an important mineral in this oxidation zone. Particularly high malachite deposits occur when limestone is present in the soil alongside the ores.

The green gemstones have already been found in countless locations, with particularly significant deposits in the following regions:

  • Ural
  • Congo
  • New South Wales
  • New Mexico
  • South Australia
  • Arizona
  • Namibia
  • France
  • Romania
  • Elba
  • Germany

Of the more than 8,800 locations worldwide, there are only a few copper deposits where malachite occurs in large quantities. Most of the time it only appears inconspicuously in the form of earthy, powdery or kidney-shaped crusts.

Properties and special features

Malachite is always green, with the color ranging from light green to black-green. It has a pronounced multi-coloring, which ranges from light green to yellow-green to deep green, depending on the direction of the light. The color gradient is due to the shell-like structure of the stone. In addition to the light green streak color, the copper provides the color variations. With a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, the gemstone is a rather soft gemstone with perfect cleavage and a conch-like, uneven and brittle fracture. In its natural appearance, malachite has a glassy sheen. It can be polished to a satin sheen. However, this sheen fades with water, which can even cause the color to change. As a relatively soft gemstone, malachite fades when exposed to sunlight. The mineral belongs to the class of carbonates and is monoclinic. The transparency is translucent to opaque. Clustered, needle-like crystals rarely form. Malachite has an important meaning in esotericism.

To discharge old burdens and bad energies, malachite is placed overnight on hematite tumbled stones. As the gemstone is very sensitive, it can also be wrapped in a soft cloth. To recharge it afterwards, it is best to place it overnight on Amethyst during a full moon. or rock crystal . The best effect is achieved when the full moonlight shines directly on it. Finally, the gemstone is cleaned thoroughly in dry sea salt. Soaps, acids and heat destroy the gemstone.

You will know for yourself through your own experience which method of cleaning is the best. However, caution is advised when using a water bath. A bath that is too long can take away the shine. Too much sun will cause it to fade. How often the malachite is discharged and charged is up to each individual. In most cases, the wearer himself can tell when it is dark and dirty and needs cleaning.
